Nunatsiavut is a self-governing Inuit region in Northern Labrador, Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), Canada. The region consists of five coastal communities – Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville, and Rigolet. Each community is managed by an Inuit Community Government (ICG) (an independent, municipal-level government organization), but the region as a whole (all five communities) are governed by the Nunatsiavut Government (regional government). The Nunatsiavut Government (NG) was proudly established in 2005, becoming the first Inuit region in Canada to achieve self-governance.

Fundamental Inc. was engaged by the Nunatsiavut Government to complete both community and corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) emission inventories for all five communities, as well as a corporate inventory for the Nunatsiavut Government as an organization. Fundamental coordinated with representatives from each ICG and from NG to gather the data required to complete the inventories. An analysis of the inventory results, description of the development process, and all technical information was included in the final report. To increase the accessibility of this information to the community, a series of videos were recorded that explained the inventory process and outcomes in simple terms. Lastly, Fundamental Inc. provided a high-level climate action planning and tracking template for the region. The project was funded by CIRNAC’s Northern REACHE Program and was part of a larger initiative aimed at reduction of GHG emissions by engaging at the community level.
