We offer the following Greenhouse Gas (GHG) services:

  • GHG Inventories in accordance with the following standards: ISO 14064-1, Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP), Federation for Canadian Municipalities Partners for Climate Protection (FCM PCP), IPCC Guidelines, and any other program or regulatory requirement as needed.
  • GHG Validation – for projects and/or projections
  • GHG Verification and Third Party Verification according to ISO 14064-3 in partnership with an ISO 14065 accredited body.

GHG Inventories

If you want to manage it, you need to measure it.  It’s a thing we all know.

Very basically, GHG inventories (or carbon footprints) are developed by adding up all the sources of emissions and then multiplying by an emissions factor. Activities like electricity use, fuel consumption, and waste generation all have GHG implications, either direct or indirect.

An organization may be required to complete a GHG inventory via industry regulations, or an inventory can be completed voluntarily. The structure of the inventory and the format of the final report deliverable is based on the rationale for completing the inventory: it can be legislational or strategic.   We work together with our clients to ensure that whatever we produce as a team fits exactly with what’s required – no report just for the sake of having a report.

Fundamental Inc. has completed inventories for municipalities, individuals, private companies, and not-for-profits.

Often, a GHG inventory is paired with an analysis of strategic emissions-reducing and cost-saving initiatives. As a more in-depth exercise, a GHG inventory can form the basis of a community Climate Action Plan, a corporate pathway toward carbon neutrality, or can be used to receive national or international recognition for climate action through voluntary reporting programs. Investing in these initiatives is a simple way to demonstrate corporate social responsibility and contribute to provincial, national and global climate targets

See our Climate Science page for the foundational science that guides our services.

See our Climate Action Plan service page for more information on developing your own climate action plan.

GHG Validation

In contrast to a GHG inventory which investigates past or current emissions, GHG Validation of a project involves making a projection of future emissions using educated assumptions and estimations. Anticipated performance is compared to a baseline scenario to illustrate the relative impact of various actions.

Fundamental Inc. is trained in ISO 14064-2 and can perform such assessments to ensure that your targets are ambitious yet achievable. This type of analysis is often necessary when completing applications for project funding – for example, a GHG mitigation assessment is a required aspect of the Climate Lens processes adopted by the provincial and federal governments. GHG project assessments would also be necessary if an organization hopes to generate carbon credits through the initiative.

GHG Verification

Fundamental Inc. is qualified to perform verification services locally and across Canada. We are trained in ISO 14064-3 specifications and can perform inventory verifications in-line with provincial, national, global and voluntary program reporting requirements. Fundamental Inc. offers third party verification services in partnership with an ISO 14065-Accredited firm.

A third party verification service is useful to those who:

  • Are in Newfoundland and Labrador and must measure and manage their GHG emissions in accordance with the provincial government’s Management of Greenhouse Gas Act.
  • Are submitting to a volunteer GHG program which requires third party verification – e.g. CSA Registered Carbon Neutral™ Program; or Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Program, etc.
  • Are required to report in accordance with Canadian Federal Output-Based Pricing System (OBPS) Regulations, established under Part 2 of the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act.
