Our Story

Fundamental Inc was created out of a personal realization.

A few years ago now, I bought an old salt box house on Conception Bay about 40 minutes south-west of St. John’s. I knew as soon as I opened the door it was meant to be my home. Being me, I wanted to make the home incredibly energy efficient without compromising the historic value (and update the kitchen and bathroom – it was pretty dated and nowhere near building code). I was aiming to make it sufficiently energy efficient that I would, in future, be able to supply it fully with on-site renewable power.

I evaluated the house’s construction (quasi-balloon framed with a timber on rock foundation, and thirteen layers of wallpaper for insulation!). I developed a detailed energy model and came up with a retrofit design for the envelope and mechanical system which included insulating on the exterior and installing a hydronic in-floor heating system. As I planned the renovations, I calculated how much the project would cost up front and then how much I would save on energy bills once I was finished.

The results were amazing (and if I’m being honest a bit surprising considering I was working with a quite old house). The retrofits enabled significant cash flow savings in the short term. This made the overall renovation a very good medium and long term investment strategy.

Making climate conscious decisions helped our common future, and me financially. I decided I wanted to help people achieve the same thing; and Fundamental Inc. was born.
