Fundamental Inc. was engaged by the Town of Channel-Port Aux Basques to assist with addressing their immediate housing needs, exacerbated by the impact of Hurricane Fiona in September 2022. As part of this scope of work, Fundamental provided the following services:
- Completion of a housing needs assessment including data analysis and development and interpretation of a community survey
- Compilation, assessment, and graphic representation of land and existing buildings suitable for potential housing development (opportunity inventory)
- Assessment of climate vulnerability for the Town as a whole, and specific to each property identified in the opportunity inventory
- Structural and condition assessment of two existing buildings to determine suitability for conversion from commercial to multi-unit residential space
- Research of best practices related to municipal affordable housing strategies and development techniques
- Scan of funding opportunities related to addressing housing need
- Final recommended actions and associated potential sources of funding
This scope led to the completion of an application to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Housing Accelerator Fund. The Town of Channel-Port Aux Basques was awarded over $3.3 M in February 2024.
